Our next exhibition is called “Naked in Glastonbury” and features the work of Marion Roach.
‘’Drawing has been important to me since childhood and essential to my life’s work as a clothes designer’’
Born in Bristol. West of England College of Art; Degree in Dress Design.
London, spent some years working in Fashion design particularly Haute Couture in Mayfair, creating clothes for film stars such as Vivienne Leigh, for royalty and members of the aristocracy
In her spare time, continued with millinery and life drawing at St Martin’s School of Art
After marriage and divorce, ran own successful Haute couture business in Bristol and Bath, which lasted for many years, designing and making ball gowns for a wide West Country clientele while she brought up her two children alone. Working almost exclusively in pure silk, Marion became well known for her fabulous bias cut silk chiffon dresses and for her stunning heirloom wedding gowns.
Serious injuries received as result of breast cancer treatment meant she could not continue sewing or cutting. Marion took flight into the challenge of painting, starting with an exhibition at the Grant Bradley Gallery, Bristol, entitled ‘Dare to Be Pink’!! I cannot help but bring to my work, something of the store of experience I have in dressing people with fabric and colour, enhancing and sometimes reinventing the female form.
She has won a prize for her oil painting at the RWA Annual Autumn Exhibition 2013
Marion works fast and with a passion in painting and in drawing. ‘’Just the same as when designing clothes, when I find it so exiting to see what is going to come out of the end of my pencil, it is movement that inspires me. I am greatly inspired by the organic movements and rhythm taking place in nature whether in a flower, or a piece of natural silk that I am about to change into something to put onto a moving body. I am inspired too by the movement and rhythm of the figure itself and by growing trees and the constantly changing landscape. Instinctively, I try to put down on paper, the ever changing, growing forms that I see in front of me and that I sense in nature’’.
